NARUSHITEL'

(THE INTRUDER)

Anya withdrew the pair of knives from her garter and motioned toward the deadbolt. “Open as quietly as possible.”

Gwynn slid the key into the slot as slowly as she could move. Before turning the key, she whispered, “Maybe it was just Michael.”

Anya slowly shook her head. “Maybe it is Alexi waiting on other side with pistol.”

Gwynn silently vowed to never leave the apartment without her gun again. “Are you ready?”

Anya nodded, and Gwynn turned the key. The deadbolt receded into the housing, and Anya crept inside with Gwynn following closely behind. The light from the stove cast an eerie shadow across the kitchen but was the only source of light in the apartment. Gwynn sidestepped into the kitchen as Anya continued toward the living room with its floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the street below. Even with the shades drawn, a human would be silhouetted against the dim light filtering in from outside.

The blinds offered no indication of an intruder, and Gwynn was pleased to find her Glock exactly where she’d left it. She took up a position near the entrance to the hallway as Anya stepped into the living room. Believing the apartment was clear, Anya flipped the pair of light switches to illuminate the living room and hallway.

The room was empty but not undisturbed. Pressed against the lampshade was a yellow scrap of paper with a single blonde hair taped across the top. Beneath the hair, the note read:

Meet me on deck tomorrow at noon where you turned around last night . . . and don’t bring a tail.

P.S. Reload your pistol, Davis

R. White

Gwynn yanked the note from the lampshade and pulled back the slide on her pistol. The chamber was empty, and the orange follower visible at the top of the inserted magazine told her the mag was just as dry as the chamber.

“This is why I prefer knives,” Anya said. “No bullets required.”

“He can be such a pain sometimes. What is he doing in Miami? I’ve been checking in every day.”

“Maybe he wants to have picnic at park tomorrow.”

Gwynn rolled her eyes. “Yeah, I’m sure that’s it. By the way, I’m driving.”

“We will see about that,” Anya teased. “It is good that Agent White wants to see us now that we have target.”

Gwynn waggled a finger. “Now that we have a target.”

Anya ignored the correction. “With his help, maybe we will not have to really kill Carmichael.”

Gwynn’s hand flew to her heart. “Were you seriously going to kill him?”

“If he is on payroll for new Pablo Escobar, he is on the wrong side and should not be alive.”

“That’s a little harsh, don’t you think? Just because he’s on the take doesn’t necessarily mean he deserves to die. Yeah, I think he should go to prison, but I mean, here in America, we don’t just kill dirty cops just because they’re dirty.”

Anya shrugged. “This is very different in Russia.”

“I can’t argue with that logic. We’ll see what Agent White has to say at our picnic tomorrow. I think I’m actually going to be able to sleep tonight without crawling in bed with my favorite assassin.
